Every year since I was at college (many, many years ago) I have made my own christmas cards. It's been a struggle sometimes too, as if there isn't enough to do at the approach of the fesivities.
The reason I started doing them at college is that I was in the printing department and the year I started the course my tutor made a fantastic card. It was very colourful and had several cut-out windows on the front and even a picture on the inside. The whole process was by hand, screen-printed and cut out with a surgical scalpel. At the time I was amazed that anyone would go to so much trouble when cards are a relatively cheap item to buy (even if you're a student). It was something he did every year. I realised he knew what he was doing when he bought the envelopes before designing the card!
Last year we decided to produce an online card, now that so much of our lives are on the web. Not great for everyone, I have relatives who are not online or still on dial-up (the very thought). But we managed to get it to most people even if we had to plug the iPod (video) into their TV to view it. It was a stop-motion animation, that we shot one evening after we'd been to see King Kong at the cinema. It was intense, we got to bed at 5 o'clock in the morning!
We sent out postcard type announcement cards with just the URL (in snow) on the front. We (wrongly) assumed our friends and family would gather it was online.
This year we made another online card. This time it was a Flash movie,
which thankfully I just had to do the illustrations. My partner who has
been teaching himself Flash, did the rest. It was complicated in the
extreme (for him - my bit was easy!)
We kept up the suspense by posting a message on the website saying it
wouldn't be ready until the 24th. We managed to post it at about 4.45pm
on Christmas Eve. We had some problems. We were very late for a get-together with friends.
You can see both 2006 and 2005 online cards here. Both are suitable for family viewing!
